Breaking Bad was the story of a man discovering his inner darkness. Better Call Saul is the story of a man abandoning his ideals. The parallels between the two stories are obvious, but the entire tone of Better Call Saul is different, and as much as Breaking Bad defined an era of television, Better Call Saul is better, in every way. Watching an episode is like watching a precision-crafted machine made by the finest, most experienced minds in a long line of fine and experienced minds.
There’s an endless list of things to love about the show, like the sound design, the cinematography, the performances, the writing, the direction, the— you get the idea… but I think if I had to pick a favourite thing, it would be how it makes compelling cinema out of the simplest actions through precision. A character will carefully collect a set of items and perform an action which requires them to use each of those items in a precise sequence and manner, and we watch them go through every step, meticulously, deliberately, and with an understanding of their limits. It’s an enthralling cinema of competence.
The only complaint I or anyone else can have about the show is that there isn’t enough of it to sate our gluttonous appetites and the next season won’t get here soon enough.
