I thought it was alright back when I watched it in the theater; I enjoyed it more this time. The second half is far better than the first. The climax makes the movie. Talos’s arc over the course of the movie is as enjoyable as before, and hearing Ben Mendelsohn’s native accent is a rare treat. It’s great fun to see Fury and Agent Coulson in their pre-Avengers days, too.
It’s impossible not to mention the reprehensible vitriol and hatred directed towards Brie Larson. People who treat people like that, who hate women simply for existing, should not be allowed to interact with humans.
On a more pleasant note, though, I think Larson did a splendid job of portraying a character who was a blank state upon her introduction yet lacked nothing in spirit, indomitability, or charm. It was a lot to ask, but she rose magnificently to the occasion. The movie as a whole remains a middling first half, a good second half, and a top-notch climax built around a character I would love to see more of. It’s a shame Captain Marvel had to be sent away for almost all of Avengers: Endgame (2019), what with her story-ending powers and all.
