Beautiful and moving. The leads are charming, the performances and the writing are superb across the board. The music is perfect, including the needle drops.

Normal People is the epitome of a soft, melancholic, poignant romance. It will wash over you, break your heart, and leave you craving more. Connell and Marianne’s final parting is inevitable from their very first meeting, yet every moment is unpredictable and enthralling. Even though the story is genuinely about ‘normal people’, every frame is significant, momentous.

I have to admit I don’t quite understand the significance of Marianne’s repeated ‘I would let you do anything to me’. I do understand it in a literal sense, but I assumed the repetition throughout the show was leading to something.

As an aside, I could listen to Noma Dumezweni (Gillian the therapist) read the phone book. What an orator.
