I remember being thoroughly charmed and delighted the first time I watched this. Given that the sequel was a masterpiece, I wasn’t sure what to expect when revisiting the original. Happily, it’s just as lovely and enchanting as before. Judy might be obnoxiously unprepossessing and Nicole Kidman suitably terrifying and inhuman as Millicent, but every other character is just so marvelously etched. Mary is tremendously sweet and Paddington is wonderful from head to toe. The film as a whole is endearing, warmhearted, and overflowing with a sincerity rarely seen in stories today.

I do have to say I was mildly disgusted, again, by the early scene with the toothbrushes.
