This is more of the (wonderful) same from a brilliant, inventive author who knows exactly how to tell the story she wants to tell. I am such an admirer of Marie Brennan’s writing. The sole complaint I have is that the various peoples we encounter over the course of the series don’t show the same level of creativity as the rest of it. Perhaps they are the result of careful research, perhaps not; either way, while Scirland is obviously the counterpart of the United Kingdom, every other part of the world seems like a jumble of characteristics of different real-world cultures, rather than a unique creation. It hardly detracts from one’s enjoyment of the book, but it is puzzling.
