Lovely movie. I’ve been a fan of Haley Lu Richardson ever since The Edge of Seventeen and Columbus , and she does not disappoint here. Nor does Giancarlo Esposito, who looks like he’s having a great time with his character.

I’ll admit Unpregnant’s supporting cast doesn’t show the same depth as Booksmart’s. It’s especially hard to stomach Veronica’s boyfriend, Kyle, who’s barely more than a caricature. There’s also an unexpected moment with a taser which I’ve seen described as ‘slapstick comedy’ but which is really a bit disturbing.

Then again, this is a movie that has both Josh from Road Trip as a creepy Christian fanatic and a shot of Haley Lu Richardson sitting in a playground, with the sunset peeking through the trees behind her, that was so lovely it made me gasp. It is of course sweet, funny, poignant, and emotional, but its authenticity and heartfelt empathy for its protagonist are what give it importance and relevance.
