I loved its predecessor, which was among the last games I played before I quit gaming a decade ago. Life was good in the second half of 2019,[1] so I wanted to celebrate by playing one game. I turned to XCOM 2, which I’d heard great things about. What an excellent game. It adds depth to every aspect of the first one. It stole nearly a month of my life, but I don’t regret a single moment. The stories I could tell… At any rate, as is my wont, I took the opportunity to free myself when I eventually found the going too hard on my third playthrough.

I must say, I’ve always been partial to strategy games. The recent resurgence of XCOM-style turn-based tactical games is perfect for me. I don’t think I played much of anything between XCOM 2 and my return to DotA the next year, though. (And of what I’ve played since, I can’t say I’ve found any with quite as many frustrating missed shots.)
